"WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?"
A common question I'm asked is "what should we wear to our shoot?" It seems to be a constant source of stress when doing a photoshoot, and I'll admit, I struggle with it when styling my own family!
COLORS
The best thing is to find a color scheme. You can look at some of the examples in this post, or, if nothing here speaks to you, go to Pinterest. There, look up "Color Palettes" and find a color combo that you love!
When it comes to styling photoshoots, you don't all have to match, but you should all blend. That means sticking to a color palette. Now, that palette can have several options, but you basically don't want anyone to stick out like a sore thumb. For example, if everyone is in pastels and one person is wearing black, that will not look good.
STYLES
Photoshoots can have different styles: luxurious, casual, funny... When it comes to family portraits, dress up. That doesn't mean you can't wear jeans, because you absolutely can! Just dress them up with a nice blouse or button up shirt for the guys. This also is an opportunity to buy that flowy dress and wear something that, though you wouldn't normally wear it in an open field, would look beautiful in photos.
Again, you want to blend with your group. So decide if you want to be in nicer clothes or more casual.
Be aware of your shoes. The perfect photo spot often involves at least a little walking. Make sure you wear shoes that you can walk in - and that you can walk on multiple terrain in. Or, wear shoes you can walk in and bring a bag with your dressier shoes.
WHAT TO AVOID
There are some things to avoid when it comes to picking out clothes.
Do not wear any logos or screened tees. Those are distracting, and don't look very polished.
Avoid small repetitive patterns (like small pinstripes). These can create a rainbow effect when viewed on a screen.
Do not wear neons, fluorescent colors, or overly bright colors. Be overly bright when riding a bike, not when taking photos. Neons and overly bright tones look awkward on camera.
